Created for the space program more than 20 years ago, fuel cells are beginning to find their way into commercial use. The fuel cell has no moving parts. It is designed to consume a hydrocarbon (propane gas) to create electricity. There are no by products of combustion (exhaust gases) resulting from the process. The only by products are heat, water vapor and electricity. The electricity produced by the fuel cell is extremely pure (99.999%) so that as the electrical distribution system continues to falter, it is expected that fuel cells will begin to fill a greater need for reliable electricity. With unit costs beginning to drop, it is expected that fuel cells will become inexpensive enough for the homeowner to install and operate and be free of the utility.
Some businesses that require their systems be fully operational 100% of the time have already begun to install fuel cell systems. The only question mark in the process is Hocon’s ability to provide reliable propane delivery service, a problem that should never be in question. In fact we are looking at systems that monitor the fuel level at the customers site, and contact us through wireless technology should the fuel level drop below a pre-determined level. Hocon fosters and embraces changing technology and the reliability it will help provide for our customers.
