Can Propane Tanks Explode?

thumb image

It’s possible, but not likely

If you are a propane customer who decided to use propane, in part, because of its safety record you may be surprised to learn that propane tanks can in fact explode. While this is true, it doesn’t take away from the fact that propane is indeed still safe to use. Let’s take a close look at why.

The truth about propane tank explosions

Yes, the fact of the matter is that propane tanks can explode. Propane is a combustible material so there is always the chance of an explosion, especially when temperatures get very hot.

When propane gets warm it expands, which causes the pressure inside a propane tank to increase. Once a safe pressure point is exceeded, a propane tank can rupture and a rupture can cause an explosion if a propane tank is near any ignition sources or open flames (so keep your tanks far away from these!).

However, this is pretty rare and unusual. In fact, the Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that there are only about 600 propane tank explosions a year. That number is not very large considering that propane is used in about 11.9 million households, according to the National Propane Gas Association.

Propane safety facts

As we mentioned, propane has a track record of being extremely safe despite the fact that a propane tank explosion is possible. Here is a look at what makes propane safe and user friendly:
