Q: Can I heat my house with a vent-free log set?

A: We don’t recommend this. Ultimately this option compromises the air in the house. If you’re looking for a main heat source, a direct-vent fireplace or a direct-vent fireplace insert is the way to go. Those are, essentially, decorative furnaces. They’re higher in Btu’s, feature safe, sealed combustion and do not compromised air in the house. These units come with blowers to distribute warm air effectively. They’re a secondary heat source but they could actually be a main heat source for a particular part of your house.

Q: What are some of my options in direct-vent hearth products?

A: There are many direct-vent options, which are generally priced in the $3,500 to $6,000 range. You can pick the liner of the fireplace: brick, black porcelain or copper reflective liner. You have different media options too: logs, rocks or glass.

Direct vents feature electronic ignition and they can be controlled by thermostats, which adds to your convenience.

You can also choose from different face options. Do you want a slim square, a rectangular face or an arched front or face? We are happy to schedule a consultation with you to help you make the best choice for your family and home.
